Three minibuses carrying the thirty eight prisoners came out of Kaliti
prison, sped past the busy streets of Addis and headed to the houses of the
prisoners. Birtukan Mideksa and Muluneh Eyuel showed kinijit's famous "V" sign
to the cheery and whistling people waiting for their release outside the gates of the

(Thursday 2 August) adjourned the trial until 8 October, when the court will give

will now spend two more months in prison awaiting the verdict, while the court

Kinijit leadership visit to US delayed
For Immediate Release

The Ad Hoc Coordinating Committee has learned that the Kinijit leaders have not
yet received entry visas to enter the U.S. As a result, the August 29 expected
date of arrival is likely to be postponed to give the leaders more time to secure
visas. The leaders have completed all of the requirements and submitted their
visa applications, and we are informed that the U.S. Embassy is awaiting
clearance from the Department of State. The Committee expects that the consular

An Addis Ababa neighborhood honors Bertukan Mideksa

The Ferensay Legacion area residents of Addis Ababa have awared the Vice
President of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (Kinijit) Bertukan
Mideksa a brand new car on Saturday.Ferensay Legacion is Wzt. Bertukan's
neighborhood. It is also an area that was savagely attacked by Woyanne tanks and
Agazi special forces during the Nov. 2005 civil unrest when the residents tried to
protect their favorite daughter from being taken away by security forces. To avoid
further boodshed, Bertukan surrendered herself to the Woyanne, saving the
neighborhood from Mogadishu-like devastation.Also on Saturday, the Ferensay

Kinijit leaders heading to North America

The team of delegation led by Kinijit Chairman, Ato Hailu Sahwel, is expected to
travel to the United States next week. The delegation's visit was delayed because of
visa problems. All except the chairman have today received the visa. Embassy

The Ad Hoc Committee coordinating the Kinijit Leadership Delegation visit to the

When the Kinijit delegations arrived in Washington DC and London earlier
today, they were welcomed by thousands of supporters and well-wishers. Dulles
Airport in Washington was swamped with over 5,000 Ethiopians who chanted
and displayed Kinijit's V sign. Many were observed crying when the
Kinijit leaders stepped out. The police and the organizers could not control the
excited crowed. After making two attempts to let Wzt. Bertukan and colleagues
make a brief remarks, the police were forced to take them back to the waiting room
and sneaked them through a side door to the limousines that were waiting

Kinijit chairman Hailu Shawel has arrived in Washington DC this afternoon after a
few days stay in Minneapolis. Close to 1,000 Ethiopians greeted him at the
Washington Reagan Airport as he exited the terminal on a wheelchair provided by
the airport. The shaleqa group, including Shaleqa Yoseph himself, Dr Taye
Woldesemayat, Ato Solomon Bekele, Ato Merchaw Seneshaw and others,

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2003 (Ethiopia Democracy and
Accountability Act of 2007) on a unanimous vote at exactly 12:58 Eastern Standard
Time. Donald Payne delivered an impassioned speech on the floor of the House
urging members pass the bill. He outlined the long train of human rights abuses that

former co-owner and publisher of the
weekly newspapers Asqual, Menilik and
Satenaw, Fasil was one of 14 editors
and reporters of independent and
privately-owned newspapers arrested
after publishing articles critical of the
government’s actions during the May
2005 parliamentary elections. The
journalists were accused of genocide
and treason, charges that could bring
life imprisonment or the death penalty.
While in jail, Fasil gave birth to and
cared for a son, who was premature and
underweight due to inhumane
conditions and lack of proper medical
attention. She was released from prison

Ethiopian government's stance on human rights attacked

The lack of democracy and the large-scale human rights violations
in Ethiopia were condemned by MEPs on Tuesday at a hearing held
by the EP's Development Committee and the Human Rights
Subcommittee. The Ethiopian Government's refusal to send a
representative to speak to MEPs was also criticised.
"The human rights situation has deteriorated since 2005 with the
imprisonment of members of the opposition and human rights
defenders who still await trial", said Josep Borrell (PES, ES), chair

Ethiopia charges 55 gov't opponents with rebellion

ADDIS ABABA, June 5 (Reuters) - The Ethiopian government has
charged 55 opposition members with trying to launch an armed
rebellion, the state-run Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported on
Tuesday. The case is the latest to be brought against the
opposition, and in particular members of the Coalition for Unity and
Democracy (CUD), since 2005 parliamentary elections ended in
violent protests that killed nearly 200 people. "The 55, who were
members of the CUD, are charged with conspiring to launch armed
rebellion against the government, following the 2005 national
election," ENA reported, quoting charges brought by the

A court in Ethiopia has found 38 senior opposition figures guilty of
charges connected to mass protests after disputed elections two
years ago.
The charges ranged from armed rebellion to "outrage against the
constitution"Sentencing is next month and they could face the death
penalty, says the BBC's Elizabeth Blunt in Ethiopia.
Hundreds of thousands took part in demonstrations complaining of
fraud and vote-rigging by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's government

Wednesday

Following the rumor on the release of CUD
leaders, some family members of the
detained and people close to the issue, who
request anonymity told capital that the
ongoing closed discussion between the
government and the detained may conclude
next week on Wednesday June 27, 2007 by
releasing the detainees. According to close
families of the jailed CUD leaders, the two
parties have come up to a point in which they
agreed and added that they expect their
families to join them in the next couple of

continuing with their tour of major US cities to meet with and express their thanks
to supporters as well as human rights protectors for their unwavering support and
protest against their unjust incarceration. CUDP delegate members were imprisoned
for almost two years following the May 2005 general election charged of genocide
before their release from prison this summer. They were also sentenced, by the
